Birth Reclaimed

Reclaimed Woman is dedicated to women and their wellbeing. Birth is the one of the most important and transformative rite of passage in a woman's life. While the nurses and midwives may be strangers to you, the Doula is a continuous reassuring presence during the pregnancy and the birth with whom you have built a trust relationship. As a Doula, I will support you in having the most satisfying and empowering experience during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum. I provide emotional support and a constant presence you can lean on as well as guidance, information, tips and education.

Labor support effect (Cochrane review on continuus support during childbirth, 2017)

  • 40% less likely to need a caesarean section

  • 30% decrease ot the risk of being disatisfyed with the birth and to suffer postnatal depression

  • 15% increase of vaginal birth with less medication and intervention

  • Labour is shorter by 25% on average

The way women are treated at birth set the tone for the beginning of their journey as mothers and how empowered and confident they feel as mothers. It has been shown in numerous studies that the support mothers receive during labor is the dermining factors of their satisfaction level with birth.  Birth is the most important memory a woman have and that memory shapes her in more than one way as Penny Simkin, childbirth educator,  maternal advocate and founder of the Doula DONA network explains here.

A woman's birth experience is not someting that just happens to her and then it's over. A woman's birth is about who she is, it's about who she becomes, it defines her, it un-makes her and it re-makes her, it unravels her and it puts her together again.

At the origins of the Doula profession, we find gossips. In Early Modern England, a “gossip” was any one of a handful of women at the bedside of an expectant mother. Gossips were wise women of a certain age, having already given birth themselves and going to the bedside of the woman to support her, reassure her and do their best to ensure that the birth goes as smoothly as possible. A 16th-century physician described the gossips as: “a few godly, expert and learned women." The gossips were tasked with creating a safe environment so that the woman giving birth could feel secure and free to follow her instincts. They made sure she was warm, fed, catered for and supported her physically and emotionally. These tasks are those of the Doula today.

A Doula is a non-medical professional who supports expectant parents during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum by providing physical and emotional support during the perinatal period. The Doula is employed by the future parents and is an experienced mother. She puts her experience at the service of the expectant mother and father while respecting their own choices and does not provide any medical care. The Doula is here to inform and care without judging or pressing. Doulas help families to feel supported, easing the emotional experience of birth.

The birth is the the birth of a family, of a mother, a father and a child. It is one of the most important event in a life that has a great impact on the beginning of the journey as new parents. Every family should benefit from nurturing and connection at this tender, incredible time in their lives.
